Kanye/ Taylor Incident on the VMAs 2009

I don't know Kanye or Taylor. Here are my two cents based on just this incident and some of the interviews I have watched.

Music is a way for us to express ourselves. Both Kanye and Taylor are artists that are heavily involved in the production of their music. Just like plenty of other artists out there who put their heart and soul into their music. But different music appeal to different people. Where there is a strong appeal, there sets a trend, and that trend becomes part of a culture. You can appreciate certain music more, and certain music less, but one does not simply decide what our 'culture' should listen to.

When Kanye calls himself a 'culture soldier' in Ellen's show, I am very disappointed. Yes we place the music we love close to our hearts and want our favourite artists to be acknowledged because it represents our taste, our feelings and what we go through in life. We want everyone to see how good our favourite artists are. Sadly, Kanye's good intentions did not make him the 'culture soldier' he calls himself.

A 'culture soldier' should not place the trending of music, or any other entertainment at such a high pedestal. Yes, these are the things that shape our culture drastically. But at the end of the day, our culture is and should be about love, kindness, peace, grace, being respectful, encouraging and accepting of others (This sounds cliche but we really do have enough hate in this world). And believe it or not, I would much rather listen to music that reflects these good cultured attributes.
