Pavilion Materials.
This shows how the design can adapt to existing spaces.
The main feature of my design are the multi functional storage units. Primarily these will be used for structure and storage of the materials. Other functions include: Dividing spaces - sliding doors between to create private areas Exhibition space Place to work - fold out desks and chairs

Purpose of the Materials Lab
Provides a huge library of materials for students, professionals and the public to view, sample and work with, eliminating the need for manufactures to send out multiple samples to each individual.
This central location allows for people from all over the city to come together to collaborate effectively in a space that in designed for the activities and has materials and resources required at hand.
The material lab will also provide a place for travelling designers to work for a day when they are away from their offices, in a central and easily accessible location. Workshop and seminars will take place within the design lab, providing a centre of creative education and allowing manufactures a platform to connect directly to designers.
The material lab will double as an exhibition space for local artists and designers to display their work. This location is ideal for this due to the National Museum gallery being within close proximity which will hopefully encourage visitors to exhibitions within the lab. I aimed to create a pavilion that set up in Cardiff temporarily to create a buzz and interest for creative industries. If this was successful then I would adapted my design in order to establish a more permanent solution for the materials lab. For this I planned to install my idea into one of the many empty shop units within the city. This will also help to solve the problem of many empty buildings. I then planned for the pavilion to move on to another city within the UK. Where successful more permanent material labs will be set up. This will then create a network of creative hubs accessible to a wide range of people.
Location
I chose to locate my pavilion in the area outside Cardiff City Hall and National Museum Cardiff. I selected this due to its central location making it accessible to many, including the large amount of design courses and industry practices within close proximity. This particular area has also been used in the past for various pop up events, therefore would be suitable for a temporary pavilion. I also believe for the materials lab to be a success it will need to of interest to the general public. By placing it here it will complement the art gallery within the National Museum. Much like the material lab within MoMA I hope that visitors to the museum will feel inspired to then use the materials lab.
My Proposal
My proposal for the materials lab was to create an open versatile space that can be used in a variety of ways by a range of people. The main focus of my design was the method of displaying the materials and how people will use the space. Within my design I wanted to include spaces for the material lab, exhibition, seminars, workshops and places for people to work individually and within groups. The whole space should also allow for socializing and networking. I aimed to create a pavilion that can pop up in different areas of the country. I also aimed to make a design that can be adapted to work within existing spaces such as empty shop units. The first diagram shows how I will proportion the space I design, highlighting the key areas I want to include. I aim to create a plan that is flowing and allows all these different functions to take place harmoniously. An integral part of my proposal is designing the structure of the pavilion to also serve as the method of storing and displaying materials. I have designed a unit that is strong enough to be the main structure of the pavilion but is also able to adapt to house the wide range of materials that would be showcased in the lab (image 3). The main frame of the structural elements will be made from square hollow steel due to its strength ease of construction and availability. Then plywood would be used to create storage elements such as drawers and shelving, or to block off areas of the frame to display work.
