Seven years after the massively popular “LA Ink” launched, CMT capitalized on the popularity of competition shows and continued millennial interest in tattoos with its new 2014 show “Tattoo Titans.” Cleveland artist J. Michael Taylor may have narrowly missed walking away with the top prize on the show’s very first episode, but a year later he was in St. Petersburg, Florida, opening the doors to his brand new tattoo and art gallery, Black Amethyst, located at MLK Jr. St. N. and 7th Ave. Launched with an “art-first” approach to everything they do inside the gallery, in 2016 Taylor looked to project that image on the outside with one of his paintings. Taylor found the perfect local collaborator with the Vitale Bros. Born in sunny St. Pete, Florida, Erik Jones eventually landed in Brooklyn, New York after graduating from the Ringling College of Art and Design. Jones started out working primarily as an illustrator but as the market for his work has grown he is now able to spend most of his time doing fine art work for galleries—using a variety of mediums to enhance his work with “non-representational forms that could be said to mimic geometric high-end fashion.” He returned to St. Pete for the 2015 Shine Festival, to create this colorful “billboard for beauty” on the side of Andi Matheny’s acting school at 1st Ave S. and 23rd St. Helping Jones translate his normally gallery-scale work onto a wall of this size he leaned heavily on the Vitale Bros. and their decades of experience as an integral part of the St. Pete art scene. “They were great” Jones says, and all he had to do was come in and paint the “abstract-ish, paint throw-y parts” he adds with a laugh.  @erikjonesart  @vitalebros  @shineonstpete  @ilovetheburg

“The Blue Goose in St. Petersburg gets major points for simplicity” says the Tampa Bay Times. “It’s not a flashy bar, or a rowdy one, and the drink selection is to the point.” Shortly after opening in early 2015 in the up-and-coming Edge District of St. Petersburg, Blue Goose turned to long time St. Petersburg muralists, Johnny and Paul Vitale, to create this iconic signage. In addition to their mural business the brothers are accomplished artists and have been showing their work along with brother Joey since 2008. In May, 2016, Blue Goose played host to “Murder It” featuring new works by the three brothers. @vitalebros @the_blue_goose @ilovetheburg @tampabaytimes

Johnny and Paul Vitale started working together as the Vitale Bros. in 1992, doing hand-painted murals and lettering all around St. Petersburg, Florida. With decades of experience building their technical skills the brothers have not only made a name for themselves with their contributions to the rich St. Pete street art scene, but have been generous in lending their expertise to the many other artists who have come up alongside them. This 2015 mural, on the side of 9th St. N. cocktail lounge, The Blue Goose, was done for the Shine St. Petersburg Mural Festival. With the demolition of the distinctive ‘inverted pyramid’ pier initiated only days before the festival the timing was right for the Vitale Bros. to portray this design of the structure getting its revenge.
