The representation of the black body, woman or man is always POLITICAL. It’s fully loaded by history.
When you go back in the history of the representation of the black body – you also go back into the history of photography when black bodies in the beginning were mostly shown as nude bodies, with a national graphics esthetics represented as the ‘beautiful’ savage. Meanwhile with the creation of photography the inversion of colors appears in the negative which makes a reversal of skin tone, and is making the black body aware but also opposites it to the white body.
With the Harlem renaissance American blacks used art to prove their humanity and demand for equality. The Afro Americans reapropriated their own image. The creation of art would serve to uplift the race. At the same time and intertwined pan Africanism was created, followed by several movements like blaxploitation till now.
