There were some options for photo editing before Instagram came and dominated social media, but when it came to quality apps, the pickings were slim. I was using one to brighten, one for filters, one for vignettes, etc. But then Instagram exploded and it really created a new space for people to develop photo editing apps. 

Hands down, VSCO CAM is my favorite. It's made by Visual Supply Co and let me tell you— these guys know their stuff. If you're like me and you judge apps by the way they look, then you'll love this one off the bat. It's slick looking and very intuitive. There's two editing menus, as seen in the photo above. One for tools and one for filters. 

A typical workflow for me would be something like this: 1) Crop the photo into a square format using Squaready (assuming you will be editing it for Instagram). 2) Import into VSCO CAM. 3) Fill +2 (if needed). 4.) Throw a #5 filter on. 5) Fade as desired. 6) Vignette +1 or +2. 7) Export 8) Upload to Instagram.

Being a photographer definitely gives me a slight advantage since I usually know what I want when I'm looking at a scene that I want to shoot. You might just want to try a bunch of things and see what you like best. I do that, too. Sometimes I'll even save two versions and blend them using the Blender app. The best way to get results you want is to dive in and just mess around.
