Between 1940 and 1942, during the Second World War, Spain built hundreds of military fortifications throughout the Canary Islands. Although the country remained officially neutral (and later "non-belligerent"), the Franco government feared a possible Allied invasion of the archipelago. As a result, a vast coastal defence system was created, consisting of bunkers, machine-gun nests and observation posts carefully designed to blend into the surrounding landscape using reinforced concrete and local stone.

Today, almost 400 fortifications have been identified across the Canary Islands. While most are concentrated in strategic areas of the archipelago, a few can still be found in the south of Gran Canaria, making them even more unique.

At Punta Cardón, visitors can even step inside the bunker and experience its confined interior, imagining what life must have been like for the soldiers stationed there more than eighty years ago.
