Introducing Spinball!

Technically a Sonic OC, but kinda not… and technically also an AU? It’s kinda complicated because they are based on a concept introduced within the games lol

The style of the two drawings differ because I was messing around with my style a bit! (Experimenting with my more stylized art, and then trying to nail down something a bit more on model- I’m going to keep working on that one)

The artist behind these models is Kunitake Aoki, and a few years ago it was discovered he had very low resolution (but full color) resolution images of these renders.

These are likely what the in-game graphics were made from.

Generally speaking, I think these are the same model, though there are differences. Sonic's shoes appear to be flatter and wider in the Sonic 3 render, and his pupils are wider and cuter, too.

But if you look at things like the shape of the socks, or the shape of his right ear in particular (the one on the outside of his head, to our left) they are the same between the two models.

So it's the same artist, the same model, but they refined it between games. The S&K model is Version 2 of the Sonic 3 model.

Same S&K model was used in the jewel case art for "Virtual Sonic."

This actually gives us a really good look at the hand to compare with the Sonic 3 render -- note the position of the pinky finger, the way it's bent, almost tucked under the other fingers. Matches what we can tell of the Sonic 3 render, but he's got the S&K render's thinner pupils.

Something I always thought was funny about the Virtual Sonic render in particular was the index finger. The tip looks kind of weird, doesn't it? If you look at the back of the jewel case art...
