The viri strode amongst the foliage, appraising his own personal crop. The daffodils were flourishing, bright yellow heads swaying gently in a warm breeze. He liked those in particular. The human woman had even gotten compliments on them, and had planted them herself, not questioning why the seeds had come in the mail when she hadn’t ordered any. Bryan’s falsified note about some fictitious gardening club had made easy work of it. Ironic, how the humans were so eager to aid him in their own decay.

Bryan had done his research. His first thought had been nightshade, but it was far too deadly- he didn’t want to draw undue attention, not when he was still… experimenting. Foxglove and daffodils, however, fit right in with the garden. The humans would never suspect such pretty plants to end up in their teabags and seasonings.

As it was the viri was quite pleased with his progress. It was almost too easy, to control the humans in his own way. Their size meant nothing when compared to his wit and intellect. They were too stupid to even notice his use of their cell phones.

Satisfied with the growth of the plants, Bryan took the opportunity to pick a flower from the foxglove, wearing makeshift cloth gloves around his hands to protect himself from any unwanted traces. He carefully stowed the plant in his bag, before unwrapping his hands and heading toward the edge of the flowerpot. His line was still there, safety pin latched to the edge of the ceramic, and the viri slid back down to the ground with ease. From there Bryan walked casually back towards the house, slipping through the wooden lattice that covered the underside of the porch.

Deep in a corner, where no human ever looked, was Bryan’s own personal apothecary. The viri hung up the foxglove to dry next to some other herbs he had gathered. A shallow stone basin and a simple pestle sat nearby, ready for whenever the plants were brittle and ready to grind up. Bryan had some time yet- and the last herbs he had snuck into the human’s pantry weren’t quite gone.

With that done, Bryan took the stairs up the foundation and slipped inside. He walked along in the low space underneath the floorboards, his eyes adjusting to the much dimmer light even as he traced a familiar path. There was the sound of human footsteps above him and Bryan paused. The floorboards creaked underneath the giant’s weight. Bryan knew from experience that it must be the human man.

The viri listened as the human stepped forward, before the floorboards groaned and there was a shuddering gasp. An enormous crash rang out overhead and the floor reverberated as the weight of the entire human thudded onto it. Bryan grinned nastily as other footsteps hurriedly approached- the human woman. She asked her husband what had happened, and he mumbled a reply about sudden dizziness. A smirk still on his face, Bryan continued towards his home within a home, pleased with the outcome. That dose of daffodil seemed perfect.
