Ia brushed the trail of blood from her chin, smudging it against the heel of her hand in an attempt to clean herself up. Her lip had been split by a blow, and she winced as she nursed the tender cut.
“I can’t just stand by and watch those pricks hurt people. It’ll be my downfall, I’m sure.” Her tone carried a hint of exasperation, but she appeared calm and cool as usual. “I’m flattered you think it was brave, though I’d say it was bravely stupid.”
After all, it wasn’t her job to defend Novigrad’s downtrodden. She had other responsibilities, deadlines to meet lest she starve to death. And yet, she continued to cause trouble for the Eternal Fire. She was a thorn in the Hierarch’s ass, of that much she was certain. It was her motherly instincts that first drew her to protect the young herbalist from a group of witch hunters, but the fight that ensued quickly turned personal.
“Nobody wants to be caught helping mages or nonhumans, but they don’t deserve to burn any more than you or I.” Her hands moved to her satchel, retrieving a small container of salve and ignoring the blade that sat beside it, still slick with blood. “That poor girl’s only an herbalist, guilty of no crimes. I can’t help but think who may be next.”
