“ Clever, then, but perhaps not so wise as I believed I was. ” The goblet of wine he was nursing over was half-empty by the time she’d joined him by the fire, robes wrapped around her nightgown and tired eyes. He had not spoken to his wife since the moment he’d faced a wall of spears which she hid behind - a result of his not crowning her, but the Stark girl as the queen of love and beauty. He’d said her name, and she had looked at him, but given him no answer.
The rest of that day had been spent convincing his father that it had merely been a gesture of appreciation - no more, and no less. His father’s sick glee on the embarrassment Rhaegar caused house Martell in his actions still felt like a stone within the prince’s stomach, and his throat was sore from how he’d raised his voice at the king. Another slight his father would take ill, he knew.
“ How can you stand to speak to me? ” the prince asked, tone low - lest they wake up the babe, asleep upon the bed behind them. “ I deserve only your anger. ” He’d told her - monotone voice murmuring over the roar of the hearth’s fire about his discovery, how Lyanna Stark had been the one posing as the Knight of the Laughing Tree, and how he’d discovered her. How his public acknowledgement had been thoughtless at best, and foolish at worst. How he’d thought he’d been clever.
“ I did you wrong, I embarrassed you. I’m sorry, Elia. ”
