This is a vintage automated Speidel watch band display dating somewhere between the years of 1948-1952. After a lull in business during World War ll, Speidel came back stronger than ever with watch bands. The Golden Knight was unveiled; the first modernized version of the scissor-type expansion band. This was a tremendous success in the field of men’s watch bracelets and eventually ladies’ ones as well. In order to gain traction, Speidel began to build brand recognition through magazines and radio. Radio’s “Stop the Music” program succeeded in making Speidel a nationally known name. Keeping up with the times, Speidel discontinued radio advertisement and moved towards television in the 1950’s. The company is one of the earliest television advertisers in the United States. Stop the Music was a prime time radio game show that aired on ABC Radio Sundays, from March 21, 1948 to August 10, 1942. The show had players identify songs. After a song was played, a home listener would be called and could win a prize by correctly naming the song. If the listener missed the song then members of the audience were asked to identify it. There were many vocalists and stars who appeared on the show both on radio and then later on the television version. This watch band display is such a great piece of early automated advertising!
