Devil is proud to present Vinnie Smith: Mine All Mine. On view February 22 - March 22. I’ve never read Camera Lucida, but Wikipedia describes the “punctum “– one of the takeaway messages from the book – as denoting the wounding, personally touching detail which establishes a direct relationship with the object or person within it. I had a moment like this with Chuck, the subject of one of Vinnie’s portraits. In the aforementioned portrait Chuck stands at a three-quarter profile, staring away from the camera. He’s sweaty, he’s golden, there isn’t much else to the photo apart from his shadow and the shadow of [presumably] Vinnie’s arm holding a camera to him. In the cool light of the photo, Chuck becomes the sunset, the heat, and the long day that has past or is to follow. If I could describe a second punctum it was when I saw him perform in person at the Tribal House in Baltimore one autumn night last year. A third punctum when he threw a rock at me for standing near a crowd of people talking during one of the music sets. Vinnie lives in Brooklyn, New York, but seems to travel west whenever he can, taking as many photos as possible. He has a gift for making his friends look as if you’ve met them before. As if you’ve known them for as long as he has, maybe as if they're all in one place at the same time. Mine All Mine follows Vinnie’s journey across states physical and psychological. Shifting from a glorious image of his travels to a darker outlook.
