Due to recent events, this was completely rationalized. 1.6k, raywood fluff mostly. read on ao3
Everything was a lot simpler before Gavin said those words. Â âDid it always say Vineweed?â Â Everyone ran to the window. Â Through the slight smog, it was visible without the telescope â the Vinewood sign, now the Vineweed sign. Â Ryan knocked Gavin aside, taking the telescope from him, zooming it in as far as it would go. Â There, atop one of the eâs, was a guy in a purple hoodie with pink guns, fending off the cops who were trying to arrest him for vandalism from below.
Adorable.
Except Ray was supposed to be dead. Â But who else could it be? Â No one else fit the description, and it couldnât just be a coincidence. Â It was too big to be a coincidence.
âRyan, donât do anything stupid,â Geoff began, but Ryan had vaulted over the couch, grabbing his mask and keys on the way to the elevator. Â The goddamn elevator had never seemed so slow as he rode it all the way from the penthouse down to the garage.Â
Ryan was teetering on the edge â he didnât know whether he was going to hug Ray or kill him. Maybe both. Â Heâd been dead, heâd let them all think he was dead for almost two years, and this was his way of announcing his return from wherever the fuck heâd been? Â At the very least, it was completely something fucking Ray would do. Â Vineweed. Â Jesus.
Ryan sat in the driverâs seat of his black and green Zentorno â not his newest, fastest, or favorite car anymore (not since heâd gotten the RE-7B), but Ray would recognize him in it. Â He pulled the car out of the garage and onto the street, heading across the overpass and up into Vinewood. Â The sign itself was a ways away, but who cared about the âlegalâ route at a time like this?Â
It was minutes before he was revving the engine up the hill towards the sign. Â There were still cops galore underneath it, shooting up at Ray, if it was Ray. Â It had to be Ray. Â There was no way it wasnât Ray. Â Helicopters were starting to fly in. Â Ryan launched a homing missile at the closest police chopper and it exploded, raining bits of fiery metal down on the scene.Â
Fuck, bad idea, now the cops were onto him too. Â Ryan shouldered his rocket launcher and shot it into the midst of the cops. Â The explosion devastated the police, and two cars went flying. Â Ryan sprinted the short distance to the sign, watching the few remaining officers hit the ground around him from sniper bullets as he did.
âRay, that better be you!â Ryan yelled up to him.
âWhat if it is?â Ray replied, looking over the railing, down to Ryan.
âThen youâve got a lot of explaining to do!â Ryan called. Â âCome on down, Iâll call Lester. Â We can talk.â Ray hesitated for the briefest of moments before he started climbing down the ladder. Â âSweet vandalism, though.â
âThanks,â Ray said. âI thought it would make the right kind of statement to send the new year off in style.â Â He jumped from a few rungs up and landed on the ground. Â Ray grinned up at the familiar masked man beside him. Â âHowâve you been?â Â Ryan just sighed and gestured to his car, as the sirens got closer. Â They both hustled to the two-seater, sliding in as Ryan dialed Lester. Â A short phone call later, and they were back on the main road with no police following them.
âWhy are you here?â Ryan finally asked Ray, who seemed content to sit silently in the passenger seat, playing the newest Pokemon game on his DS.
âBecause you asked me to get in your car,â Ray responded without missing a beat. Â Ryan slammed on the brakes so hard Rayâs seatbelt locked and threw him back against the seat. Â âIs that not the truth?â
âWhy are you in Los Santos, why are you alive?â Ryan asked.
âOh, that,â Ray shrugged. Â âYeah, thatâs a good question, I guess.â
âWhere have you been?â Ryan continued to ask.
âLiberty City,â Ray responded.
âWhy?â
âI donât know, why does anyone do anything?â
âWe thought you were dead,â Ryan said, making a sharp turn, away from the penthouse.
âYou were supposed to,â Ray agreed. Â âThat was the plan.â
âYou⊠planned this?â Ryan asked, shooting a look at Ray.  His DS was still open in his hands, but he wasnât looking at it.  He was staring out the windshield, watching the road as they flew around corners and zigzagged through traffic.
âI went home, whatâs the big deal?â Ray asked, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible, but something in his voice betrayed he was scared. Â Ryan pulled another sharp turn, into an unfamiliar garage and parked the car. âWhere are we?â Â He hesitated. Â âDid Geoff send you to kill me?â
âWhat? Â No. Â Get out of the car,â Ryan said, exiting the vehicle.
âDid you guys move?â Ray asked, perplexed, but getting out of the car nonetheless, and following Ryan through the door into the strange building.
âIf you wanted to go back to the penthouse, be my guest, you can answer to the rest of the crew. They will undoubtedly have more questions than I do,â Ryan said. Â Ray didnât protest, but followed Ryan into the elevator. Â âThis is my new place.â
âItâs⊠nice?â
âItâs part of this whole deal Geoffâs doing now⊠I donât really want to get into it⊠weâre buying, selling, stealing, and trading cars now?â Ryan tried to summarize as the elevator chimed open at Ryanâs floor and they got out.
âCool, cool.â Â Ray followed Ryan into a nice looking living area that wasnât too unlike the penthouse, but devoid of persons besides the two of them.
âWhy are you back?â Ryan finally asked another time, pulling off his mask and turning around to look at Ray properly for the first time.  He looked the same, but different.  Same purple hoodie, same pink guns, same checkerboard vans, same, beanie, same glasses, same beard, but something was not quite the same.  He looked⊠Softer?  Happier?  Maybe Ryanâs memory was playing tricks on him.  It hadnât even been that long.  A year and a half?  Two years? How long had it been?  When was the last time someone brought him up in conversation?  Was this one long hallucination Ryan was having?
âI thought maybe you guys might need a decent sniper,â Ray said, hands stuffed in his pockets, looking down at the carpet, scuffing his feet against each other.
âWe have Lil J,â Ryan told him.
âSo⊠you guys arenât the people who posted âsniper needed for Los Santos crewâ on Craigslist?â Ray asked. Ryan frowned, not sure if he was serious.
âAre you⊠thinking of joining another crew?â Ryan asked.
âNo!  Of course not!  I thought it was you guysâŠâ Ray said, sitting down on the couch and, on instinct, reaching for the TV remote and xbox controller.
âYouâre always welcome back at Fake AHâŠ. We just⊠thought you were dead,â Ryan said, seriously, slowly sitting down beside him.
âWell, Iâm not,â Ray shrugged. Â âIf you were expecting some kind of tragic backstory, then youâre remembering the wrong person. Â Youâve disappeared before.â
âAnd you tracked me down and hauled me back,â Ryan replied.
âSo why didnât you come after me?â Ray asked. Â Ryan was shocked silent. Â He blinked a few times, then turned his head to look at Ray, still speechless. Â âI always went after you, why didnât you come after me?â
âI thought you were dead,â Ryan said, but his lie was wearing thin.
âBullshit,â Ray said. âMaybe everyone else did, but no way would you give up.â
âI looked for you,â Ryan admitted.  âI hacked every camera in Los Santos, and when I didnât find you, I hacked every camera in San Andreas, and when I still didnât find you, I knew where youâd be.â Ray sifted through the xbox menus on the TV and started a game.  Ryan wasnât paying enough attention to the screen to care which game it was.  âYouâd been gone for a month, maybe six weeks, when I packed a bag and flew to Liberty City.  I tapped into the camera grid and found you⊠it was too easy.  You were just⊠so innocent, with your family, enjoying yourself⊠I couldnât bring myself to bust in and tear you away from that. To bring you back here where youâre risking your life every day just by going outside?  Where youâre a wanted criminal?  I told everyone you were dead.  And it was for your protection.â
âFair enough,â Ray said, pulling his legs up onto the couch, not looking away from the TV.
âAre you coming back to Fake AH?â Ryan asked.
âIf the price is right,â Ray replied.
âWhatâs the price?â
âYou know that really tall guy with the skull mask? Â Totally creepy and terrifying in every way?â
âIâve heard of him,â Ryan replied.
âHeâs really hot. Can I have his new phone number?â Ray asked, finally looking over at Ryan and grinning.
âYouâre such an asshole.â
âAdmit it, you missed me,â Ray teased, unable to stop grinning.
âI missed you a ton, and youâre an asshole,â Ryan agreed. Â Ray giggled, and Ryan put an arm around Rayâs shoulders, pulling him in, so Ray was leaning on him as he played games, just like the old days.
âI missed you too,â Ray told him.  âI missed doing this.  Nights when we couldnât sleep, lazy Sunday mornings, bunkered down in a safe house after a heistâŠâ
âYou know Geoff will make you go through the whole application and hazing process, right?â Ryan asked. Â Ray groaned.
âNo way, man, Iâm not a freshman,â he whined.
âMaybe I can put in a good word with the boss,â Ryan suggested.
âWhatâs it cost?â Ray asked.
âDonât you ever fucking run away like that again,â Ryan replied.
