 It was nearing evening. The aftertaste of smoke had given way to the lingering flavor of blood, but it was familiar enough now that he didn’t make a face. They were sitting closer than usual, occupying the same patent leather sofa, another rarity. Archer ground his cigarette against the ashtray, watching gleaming red embers die under his hand. Another rarity, he hardly smoked these days.

        It took him an embarrassing long period of time to realize that Giovanni was not referring to their victory. It was not an adage about the rise and fall of the small time gang they had just crushed under the heels. The graceful thing he could do was just give him the benefit of the doubt—

        “I’m sure it’s a riveting story, sir.” He sounded disinterested, but never rude. They both knew he would sooner die than disrespect Giovanni to his face. His body language, however, was a dead giveaway. Archer leaned towards him, eager, the afterglow of a successful mission still warm on his skin. “Although I assume it’s told without words?”

        Maybe it was too daring, but the words bloom from his lips regardless. His eyes, despite their cold coloration, burned hot under the thick fringe of his lashes. He breached the space between them to grab a sparkling decanter of amber colored liquor. He kept his hands steady as he poured, one misstep and he would combust on the spot. When he finished, he lifted his glass; the crystal gleamed in the low light of the sun slipping through the thick blinds.

        It was almost nostalgic.
