Incredible event! Her Meridian Majesty had requested the youth be included in the weekend’s activities and South Downs absolutely delivered. From the talented Lykania teaching them about Anglo-Saxon and Vining beads and then giving them bead she made(!!!), to Matthias running s youth archery session AND having us come by to shoot as a group to Fiachna taking time to explain the war scenarios to every adult who swung by to say hello. Several of the kids told me it was their best event ever, and while they all think I’m cool, I know their good time wasn’t just because of me (or even mostly). It takes a Kingdom and Meridies stepped up.
Some of the youth having their first shoot.
One of the kids shot the closest arrow to the center of any archer that day, adults included.
She also captured my new MoY outfit!
Okay, good gentles. I have TODAY AND ONLY TODAY to construct my Castle Wars MoY outfit (though I can hand finish the hems during work this week). Can I do it?
update 1: gown & apron dress cut out, apron dress being feverishly assembled
A Rav and a Kal go to Silver Hammer 50 and eat best feast ever, news at 11

Kal got some picture of me actually doing some demo weaving at RUM and got some shots of the classroom table!
Each one of the muslin baggies contains a rigid heddle kit I put together for students. I gave out about a dozen of the 15 I prepped!
It was humid as can be at RUM this year (frizz activated!) and my classroom space was outside. What was supposed to be a one hour rigid heddle weaving class for Page School turned into three hours of adults dropping in 2-3 at a time and one actual child. Everyone picked it up quickly, child student included, which I love, because it’s such a soothing craft once you get into a rhythm. You can see my example favor (we did wrist bands or belt favors) hanging from my right brooch.
Other people took pictures of the actual weaving class but I was too busy to do so myself! Luckily I had Kal there to assist and he was a real champion. We took a couple really cool classes after lunch—one on Anglo-Saxon use of bone, horn, and antler, the other on gender fluidity in pre-Christian and early Christian Europe—then cut out a little early to drink Diet Coke and watch Murderbot in the air conditioning.
I’m super squinty from the glare in these photos, but you can see my not-quite-symmetrical red and pink bead festoon has been added to the Strawberry Shortcake Court Ensemble. I think the red apron dress is about as flattering as an apron dress can be if you don’t wear underwire support garments under it (which I very much do not do). It was nice to see everyone dressed in their finest, from all around the kingdom of Meridies and beyond.
Did I resist the urge to buy purple linen to make a MoY dress to wear at the two events where I’m running youth activities?
No.
But did I resist the urge to impulse buy some white and lilac herringbone wool to make a MoY apron dress to go over that dress?
Also no.
But did I back away from Etsy and successfully not purchase beads specifically to make coordinated festoons for my new MoY ensemble?
Still no.
But have I started any of these projects yet?
Um. The events aren’t until Sept & Nov, and I have plenty of time?? Right?
