in which levi ackerman is actually the last person to find out he's in love with you. written for my 1k event ♡

“oh, levi…” hange sings, poking her head around the door of his study. a crumpled piece of paper promptly smacks her full in the face.

“no,” deadpans levi from his desk without looking up.

hange steps inside and shuts the door firmly behind her, completely unfazed. “okay, no. that’s it. we definitely need to talk.”

“uhuh.” 

“levi, i’m serious.”

the scratching of his pen ceases momentarily. “is something actually wrong, or is this another one of your, uh… time-wasters?”

hange dramatically throws herself into the seat opposite levi, long limbs dangling over the back of the chair. “see, there it is again. you haven’t cussed me out. you haven't emotionally blackmailed me in an attempt to get me to leave. you haven't physically thrown me out of your room. something is terribly, terribly wrong.”

the poor man heaves an agonised sigh. “maybe i’m just—”

“in love with yn? that’s exactly what i was going to say!”

a pause. a long pause. a really, really long pause.

“hange, what the actual f—”

“don’t,” she snaps, finger in his face, “even try to deny it. you’re pissing me off—”

he bats her hand away. “get the hell out of my—”

hange counts them off on her fingers. “making her tea, pouting when she doesn’t drink it—”

“pouting? i don’t pout—”

“staring at her during briefings like she’s the only person in the room—”

“god forbid i make eye contact with the person i’m speaking to—”

hange raises her voice. “always finding an excuse to get erwin to assign you together, letting her off the hook when her room’s a mess while you terrorise everyone else, doing up her odm harnesses for her—”

“safety!” levi says, but his ears are bright red.

“bullcrap,” hange retorts. “i come on behalf of probably everyone to ask you to get yourself together and—”

“hange—”

“—ask her out, or marry her, or whatever the hell, because do you understand how painful—”

“hange. you've made your point. get out.”

oh dear. hange jumps to her feet like she was burned, raising her hands in mock defeat. she doesn't need to be told twice. 

“nice chat, captain.”

when the door finally closes behind her, levi slackens, head falling into his hands.

“what the hell...”

he's got a stack of reports to get through, a throbbing headache, and you on his mind. your smile, and the way you lean against a wall when you talk to him, and the easy camaraderie you've built with everyone, and the way he always finds himself wishing that—you and him—you'd have something more...

...

so, hange was right. upsetting. 

oh, god, she better keep quiet about this. 

(two minutes later, a knock on his door, and your voice: “hey, levi, hange said you needed me for something?”)

i have two opposing thoughts on levi about this. first he is very emotionally intelligent so he'd be pretty aware of his feelings from the beginning, denial notwithstanding. second, he is genuinely clueless and will NOT realise until every in the walls is aware and hange says it to his face to spare everyone the second hand embarrassment
