Ohhhh you should finish it! It’s very sad, but you have to see it through to the end!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has mixed feelings on House of M!  A lot of people hate it for really valid reasons that I agree with and I especially resent that long, long period where Wanda was unusable and how she’s still wrapped up in that storyline and nobody seems to much blink at how out of character it was for her.  All that sticks in my craw, too. Yet, at the same time, that storyline gave me such intense feelings on the Magnus family, that whole AU was amazing for the siblings, and, oh, I know it was terrible of Pietro to manipulate Wanda into that better world, but I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same thing in his position.  They were planning on killing his sister, for things that weren’t her fault and he was desperate to find a way to save her, the motivation wasn’t about power, but about making a world where they could finally just give everyone (they knew) what they wanted, give their father what he wanted, give their species what they wanted, give their family what they wanted, give them a world where Wanda could be happy and safe.  Yes, it got mucked up along the way (as it was always going to) and it was an inherently awful idea, but if my loved one was in the same position, could I really say I wouldn’t try to help her create that world where we could live and be happy? It was also that confrontation when everything spilled out, that the father/son issues between Magneto and Pietro were on full display, that Wanda’s reaction was after Magneto killed Pietro (by crushing him under the metal) and Wanda brought him back that she finally went “Fuck you for always throwing us under the bus for the mutant cause, I’m done with all of this” and while Wanda Would Never, at the same time, oh, shit, feelings, she did that because of her twin brother, because of how angry she is at how hard she’s tried to make them a family (not just here, but for years now).  It’s the same for how Magneto really did try everything he could think of to help her before House of M, that moment of Pietro crying on their father to do something, despite all his anger and fury towards Magneto, when it came to Wanda, it still stripped everything else away, he’d do anything to save her, this one good thing still in his life. Ultimately, yeah, the criticisms of House of M were really on point, but I love it anyway because it hit my Fucked Up Magnus Family Feelings like a freight train.

You’re very right.  Pairing fics definitely get more attention and I think part of that is them getting more popular/that’s the way fandom has further shifted, but part of it is also how much easier it is to find the pairing fics in the first place. If I want to find a good A/B fic, it’s much more likely that I’ll find one in that tag, than if I want to find a good Fandom Gen fic by looking in the main tag, especially if it’s a large enough fandom to attract a gen writing audience at all. But your comment about AU fics got me thinking and I think part of why they’re so popular is that they’re easy.  There’s definitely an element of migratory fandom writers at work--where a hot new fandom comes along and many authors/fans flock to that fandom (or pairing) and write fic that’s not particularly disciplined in terms of canonicity.  The characterization might be kind of bland, the worldbuilding might be kind of pale, it might focus on the ship more than the plot or the world because learning that kind of stuff takes a lot of time.  It’s much easier and much more forgiving (characterization-wise) to write a high school AU where you can chalk a lack of detail/characterization up to “*shrug* well, it’s an AU!” Fandoms move so fast these days fic-wise, so much faster than they used to, which means there’s not a lot of time to settle in and really devote oneself to writing that plot-based epic fic.  Some authors can crank a fic like that out in a few months.  Most take years.  And fandoms very rarely have years anymore, at least not without changing so drastically that you’re off onto the next part of that canon or the next new pairing.  And most of what’s left to inspire the 100k+ epics are a handful of diehard fandom gen fics... or the pairing-focused epics that are easier and more forgiving to write quickly. (These are generalized thoughts, of course there are always exceptions, and I realize I’m definitely in this same boat.  Often times what I immediately go for in a fandom is the pairing, I want some resolution of canon UST or I want their happily ever after.  I can still find some genfic, just... this is how the trends of fandom feel to me these days.)
