i could never say no to her. not once in the years we'd been together. — from Iaayte
Meiko was doing her best to listen. Iaayte deserved her full attention, and all the comfort in the world. Even weeks after delivering the news, it was no wonder that Iaayte was still mourning Cahciua -- even knowing that she had been gone for some time. The least she could do was let her speak her mind.
Yet still, Iaayte's grief touched her heart in a different way. When she and Remke had discussed their initial relationship, how many times had Meiko tried to persuade her against it? Knowing the destiny she and her brother held, how often her adventures were drag her away, and how likely it was that she would die young, potentially in another world, possibly vanishing without a trace?
Remke assured her that she would perservere. Just as Meiko was certain Iaayte had assured Cahciua. It was impossible not to wonder if the grief she witnessed now would eventually (or potentially already had) color her wife's features someday. It was impossible not to feel that selfsame guilt over being so selfish, knowing damn well Remke would not have it any other way.
She gave a shake of her head. "Would ye like tae grab a drink, an' tell me more about her?" she offered Iaayte gently instead. "Not the recent ills. Th'good times. Like, how did ye meet?"
"I've a feeling she'd rather ye reminisce on the fun stuff."
