OLDSCHOOL (2000) #TBT âSomehow, itâs been 15 years since Lil Zaneâs debut album, Young World: The Future, hit stores. Despite posting paltry first-week sales numbers â where it sold only an estimated 40,000 copies â Young World went on to allegedly rack up 300,000 in total album sales. By todayâs standards, thatâd pit Lil Zane as one of the industryâs top sellers, but as far as 2000 was concerned it bombed. However, despite its relative failure, one good thing did come from that album: the 112-assisted âCallinâ Meâ single. Zane and 112 had chemistry. Zane featured on the R&Bâs groupâs âAnywhereâ record and toured with them, so the pairing made sense. When they eventually linked for âCallinâ Me,â they catapulted to no. 21 on Billboardâs âHot 100sâ chart, less than a month after the albumâs release (you could argue it was the catalyst for the resulting sales). Hereâs the thing that most who know âCallinâ Meâ will admit: The most memorable part wasnât Zane, thoughâit was 112âs hook. What made it great is that it just feels like a fun summer evening whenever you listen. Maybe that idea stayed implanted due to the warm waters and speed boating shown in the video.
