Videodrome (1983) Max Ren is looking for the next best disgusting show to air on his exploitive tv station, when he stumbles across Videodrome, little does he know, Videodrome is more than just a sick tv show. Unlike my recent watches with Fulci, Cronenberg tends to be more enjoyable and wacky, and this is that! Videodrome is a really good watch, it’s intriguing, invigorating and is full of political ideas and ideologies. It’s themes surrounding the TV and some of the quotes about reality being less than TV are amazing and the first 60 minutes or so of the film are pretty straight forward, easy to understand and striking. My problem was the last 25 minutes or so, not that it was bad, it was just confusing at times. When hallucinations introduced a new element that you had to work out what was real and what wasn’t and there wasn’t really a clear distinction into what was and wasn’t real. The scenes and use of special effects are amazing and not taking anything away from them I’d have just liked a bit more clarity. The score from Howard Shore is perfect, blending a seamless stream of techno weaving throughout the film. It fits perfectly with the set pieces which contain some blasts from the past like CRT’s and the classic Atari littered about! It has a lot of depth to it, more relevant now maybe than ever. Its exploration into the idea of free speech, of video nasties exploiting minds, the TV in control, is fascinating and thought provoking! Combine that with some great acting from James Woods as Max and a special appearance from Blondie but not Blondie Debbie Harry you’ve got a real unique movie... even for Cronenberg! Overall, Videodrome is an incredibly evocative thought provoking 80’s banger that still deserves a watch today. It’s incredibly in depth, so get your thinking cap on!
