On the night of 30 May 1967, a Vickers Super VC10 of East African Airways suffered a total engine flameout over the Indian Ocean. At around 15,000 feet, a warning sounded and the engines died down. Unable to sustain altitude, the autopilot began pushing the nose down to maintain airspeed. The aircraft was saved just in time when the flight engineer, who had been in the lavatory over dysentery cramps, returned to his seat and was able to restore power to all four engines. The official cause was never determined but an EAA's chief of flight engineer training suspected crew error.
