Throbbing Gristle - Very Friendly
I have been all over the map with industrial music since Sunday. I have done plenty of reading but it only reveals the deeper complexity of what this genre encompasses. I knew that there were flavors to it but I hadn’t really considered the roots of the movement as being something genuine beyond mopey, rebellious teenagers.
An interesting effect of the anti-industrialization of music and the music industry is that much of the early industrial music is absent from Spotify, at least the particularly interesting and experimental stuff like Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse and Coil. I was pleased to find that these artists don’t have some of the major hallmarks of the 90′s industrial. If anything P-orridge sets the groundwork that is built on for the vocal styling which is an overarching part of industrial from almost all of the pieces I have sampled thus far. I find it to be the most unappealing part of the genre as well, namely because it sounds like a caricature of some villain trying to lure children into his van. It is the same type of affectation that makes me dislike most musical theater.
Why they departed from what is really, truly terrifying is unclear to me, probably because it is further out in the experimental field but it feels so real and that is the featured track. I knew what I was getting into when I started it but the 99% distortion with the detailed recounting of two completely human, real people doing something so completely inhuman gave me the kind of chills I don’t usually feel from something so creepy. But this is exactly the kind of dichotomy that interests me and the part of industrial that I am interested in: how is it that I connect as a human with something that is so inhuman?
