weird question
is your name vert supposed to be said like in a french way because that idea cant get out of my head lols
It is! It’s French for “green” (like, a true balanced green) & is pronounced “/vɛʁ/“ (if you do IPA) or else like “fair” but starting with a v, with some wiggle room on the R sound for different levels of emphasis depending on accent. (I kinda flip(?) the R, like half of a rolled R, because that’s how I learned it. But I’ve heard others de-emphasize it or emphasize it more or there’s a sorta throat sound I don’t know the name of that some people use when they say it.)
It has the same root as “verdant,” like the frog light. & I actually thought, when making this blog, that was pronounced “VAIR-dent” like using French pronunciation & was rather bummed to learn that the English pronunciation is actually “vur-DEHNT.”
I do still pronounce it “VAIR-dent” when I think or read it because I think it is infinitely more pleasant sounding.
Future/Present Vert here.
I just remembered that I have had this in my drafts since typing this up literally within an hour or so of getting this ask. (It took so long because I decided to research the etymology of the word verdant as well as listen to an absurd number of audio clips of people with different accents saying both “vert” & “verdant.” Because of who I am as a person.)
& now I am looking at this draft that could have probably just posted back then, & it has hit me: 1) I have “Vert (like French for “green”)” in my blog description & therefore probably didn’t need to write a whole thing about that. & 2) considering you asked if my name was pronounced in a French way, even if you hadn’t seen my bio, you probably are aware of the word “vert.”
But also I did spend a stupid amount of time researching & writing this post about my name whenever ago, so I’m still gonna post it in case it’s new/fun info for anyone else here.
Follow this blog for more of me posting bullshit like this that’s excessively & completely unnecessarily well researched after it spends an amount of time on a scale from days to months sitting forgotten in my drafts!
