Aether is a mermaid prince in a world where the tension between merfolk and humankind fluctuate dynamically. There are factions who strive for peace on either side just as there are others who reject the notion entirely. Some merfolk resent humankind for their shipcraft, considering it a blatant overstepping of the natural order. On the other hand, there are good number of human fleets who hunt mermaids for profit and study.
Aether and Lumine both maintain an amiable relationship with humankind before a betrayal has Aether captured and Lumine vanishing without a trace. The rest of his journey centres first around his quest to escape, then follows him as he seeks to find out the truth behind his sister's disappearance and humanity's deliberate violation of their faith.
