“How does it feel to spirit evolve?” by ZephyrWindSpirit A series of Digimon Frontier oneshots; Verse 6: Beast Spirit Light
Light.
A heartless, soulless space that burns the retinas and as a result makes the white space go black.
Light cannot exist without shadows.
Life cannot exist without light.
Grumblemon’s relentless attacks hurt. He can’t remember what happened after… Molemon? Diggymon? whatever the beast spirit was called, hit him.
but touching his head hurts more. He’s hiding in a cave, with rock people. Gotsumon, if he’s recalling right. Bokomon and Neemon at his knee, puttering on if he’s ok or not.
Clearly not. Any sort of extra light puts a spear through his mind, it’s “that” kind of migraine.
An oyster shell clatters onto the small stone table between three stone cups. “This’ll help with the bruising.” a gravely voice grumbles at him out of the half-dark.
“I don’t recall asking for help.” the warrior of light sneers. He doesn’t make much incline of his head, it hurts.
“Some legendary warrior. Grumblemon will get us all destroyed unless I find the spirit!” the Gotsumon sneers back; almost a rocky version of Light himself. He charges off against the other members of his tribe’s wishes.
Light glowers at his emptied mug before cautiously reaching for the salve. It smells repugnant. But being able to see in more than half darkness without a sharp pain in his head would help more.
How’d he get into this mess anyhow. Being pursued out of the forest by these two, and falling literally on that specific Gotsumon. Getting into a fight with Grumblemon… and a painful blank until now.
“What sort of spirit is he talking about?” Bokomon has the brains to ask the rest of the group.
“Some sort of inscription on the statues out on the cape. Crazy kid’s got rocks in his head; he’s obsessed with that spirit.”
“You don’t think-“
“I don’t think at all!”
“Thats not what I meant!”
“That my beast spirit’s nearby…”
“Yes, that is a theory. We should pursue that uppity brat of a ‘mon.”
Gigasmon wreaks havoc fighting the other kids, and steals Kazemon’s spirit. Everyone panics.
Lobomon’s fighting alone again, even if he’s not at full strength beneath. He’s holding off Gigasmon until getting smashed literally into the statue.
Light must’ve blacked out briefly because he’s human when he opens his eyes, and sees Gotsumon holding back the monster molemon with a shield of rocks.
A jewel clatters into his hands. He’s told to put that in the statue.
He does.
The three statues turn around and unearth a spirit, with the mystical power of laser vision.
It comes to his call.
And he hears howling.
If human spirit is uncomfortable, this classifies as downright painful.
He can’t see.
Something is rearranging his joints, with pops and cracks and a knee should NOT bend like that!
Pulling on his spine. Lengthening.
A sharp tang taste of something burning.
Blades bursting from the shoulders.
Not to mention the inexplicable cold of having your skin harden to metal.
Kendogarurumon is a sight to behold; a giant metal-bound wolf, with blades on his shoulders and wheels on his feet.
Roaring, the beast drives around like a lunatic, besting rocks and trees in a lack of control.
The ghosts of the warrior of light’s past rear ugly heads around him as he smashes rocks and trees, howling with rage. A particularly dark portion of rocks and trees gets more attention then the others. The darkness just makes him so ANGRY.
By sheer luck, Gigasmon attracts the mad wolf’s attention and they clash. Wrecking the whole cape to the group’s shock.
When the light dies down, nobody can see what happened.
Panicking, the group calls for their comrade, but there is no answer.
“some way to be a hero, huh.” Gotsumon comments, as he carefully drags the sack of rocks that is the rehumanized warrior of light onto a ledge. He’d been one second too late to grab him falling, and went down after him, pulling him to the next ledge down. “Being a hero must mean asking for help sometimes.”
If he got much of a reaction, it was very faint. The human looks a mess.
‘like hell’ the thought crosses Light’s dazed brain. He doesn’t have the energy to touch his own skin and make sure he’s not still made of metal
because it’s so cold. He doesn’t answer.
It felt so different to being a human spirit…
but one thing stands out in his hardly conscious thoughts; there is a MASSIVE power difference between human and beast spirits.
Notes: Needless to say, I wasn’t fully happy with the episode of Koji getting his beast spirit; there’s consequences for being smashed around that much, even if it is a tv show!
Digitaldreams’ ao3 fanfic of Frontiers Unexplored is an excellent new take on beast spirit evolution, with delving into their deepest, darkest thoughts. It is not a nice arc to go through for the ‘destined.
