so  this  is  what  it  had  come  to.   hiding  out  on  the  fire  escape  outside  the  bathroom  window,   playing  duck - and - cover  every  time  one  of  his  mom’s  guests  staggered  inside  to  take  a  leak  or  puke  up  their  rum  punch   --   or  both.   as  a  motley  crew  of  aging  hippies  turn  his  place  into  studio  54,   he  places  a  newport  between  his  lips,  the  tried - and - true  follow up  to  the  greasy  slice  that  was  his  dinner.   but  his  lighter   .  .  .   shit.   “   hey.   ”   from  his  second - story  perch,   he  spots  someone  camped  out  on  the  stoop  below.   “   yeah  --   up  here.   you  got  a  light ?   ”

              “     where   does   someone   hide   in   𝚊   𝚝𝚘𝚠𝚗   like   this ˀ      ”

                words  reach  inside  ribcage,  bruising  muscles  and  bones  alike,  finding  a  place  in  her  heart  already  waiting  for  them,  jules’  voice  speaks  words  she  has  thought  a  thousand  times,  insecurities  laid  bare  like  a  clinical  examination  of  all  her  faults  and  flaws  was  to  happen.  lay  me  bare  she  thinks,  under  the  unforgiving  light  of  a  surgery  table,  examine  every  shortcoming  of  my  character,  plunge  fingers  into  those  memories  i  have  banished  (  sometimes,  she  takes  those  memories  out  under  the  cover  of  the  night  as  if  twisting  the  knife  in  her  wound,  trying  to  see  if  it  really  hurts,  testing  how  much  she  can  take  ).  but  the  past  tense  is  noted,  appreciation  for  the  growth  there  is  to  admire  there,  had  listened  to  rue  go  on  and  on  about  jules,  secrets  whispered  &.  hypothesis  made.  her  smile  is  like  broken  glass,  tentative  and  painful,  digging  into  gums  though  it  is  maintained,  lexi  is  the  background  girl,  never  to  be  loved,  never enough,      ❛  i  don’t  think  it  has  anything  to  do  with  worthiness,  jules.  i  think  it  has  to  do  with  you  loving  yourself  first,  you  know  ?  ❜      

“okay,  but  if  i  tell  you,  you  gotta  promise  not  to  laugh.”         she barely waits a two-count before she begins to tell her story.      “i  was  getting  out  of  bed  and  i  forgot  about  the  glass  of  water  i  had  down  there,  and  so  i  kicked  it  and  it  spilled  everywhere.  and,  like,  when  i  tried  to  pick  it  up,  i  moved  too  fast  and  totally  smacked  my  face  on  the  bedside  table.  and  --  well.  this.”
