In this day — and I preempt the following since this is a volatile opinion — "Deep Breath" is my favourite Doctor Who episode.

It is about Doctor Who. It talks about the way the Doctor talks, walks, looks; it repeats its themes and the Doctor notices (is this "Spare Parts" or "The Girl in the Fire Place?") It is an anniversary episode, in spirit. Its even multi-doctor since Matt Smith makes an appearance.

It is funny. I like Strax throwing the newspaper at Clara, hitting her in the face, her falling back. I like Jenny in her statuesque pose, believing Vastra is using her as a muse for a painting — just to be revealed that Vastra is occupied with a board full of clues.

There's the confrontation between Vastra and Clara:

Moffat puts words on Vastra's mouth; words that defy Clara. And then he puts words in Clara's mouth, so she can retort the accusations relating to her falling in love with the dashing 2005 Doctor type. And the thing is... I don't even think that Moffat believes in Clara.

And then Jenny claps, which is not even funny. (Not funny like Vastra saying "People are apes. Men are monkeys." I sincerely don't know if Steven Moffat is compensating for something here or that he thinks he ATE with this ultra feminist line.)

But Clara is great in this story. Even when scared, she's a pro companion. She uses her insecurity; she remembers the day she lost control of the class and uses this at her favor against the flesh Jurassic cyborg.

And then there's the Doctor. Weird Doctor. Talking with a dinosaur, riding a horse while on pajamas, questioning the purpose of a bedroom, sniffing like a rat and wearing a flesh mask. And he stinks. He's being on the trash, investigating. And he wears a (stolen) homeless man's coat. But he's a genius — he can measure the air disturbance in the room using just a strand of hair.

Its properties are as follows:

The hatpin is attuned to both the carriage and the front door of Paternoster Row and can lock these regularly without expending charges.

The hatpin has 10 charges. It does not regain its charges unless it is charged, where it regains 1d4+2 charges over the duration of a long rest.

Expending 2 charges, the top of the hatpin can emit a green glow that sheds light in a 30 foot cone in front of you.

Expending 5 charges, you can use the hatpin to cast Arcane Lock. It takes one minute to cast, during which the hatpin emits a low level whirring noise.

Expending 3 charges, you can heat up the tip of the hatpin to cauterise a bleeding wound. When you do this, the creature you are treating takes 2d6 fire damage and must immediately succeed on a DC11 CON save or start making death saving throws. On a successful save, they are stable even if their HP fall to zero.

Using your bonus action on your turn, you can turn a dial on the hatpin to lengthen the pin and turn it into a finesse weapon that deals 1d6 piercing damage. Upon doing this, it loses all its charges.
