A fast growing fruit tree with deeply lobed foliage Vasconcellea pubescens (mountain pawpaw, mountain papaya) adds to the exotic look of the subtropical garden at Great Dixter, Sussex. This tropical tree grows well in a warm U.K. summer but will require protection from the winter cold. The plant is grown from seed in early spring with additional heat to improve germination.

This rare papaya variety from South America looks a little like okra (abelmoschus esculentus) on the outside, with a cross section of the fruit revealing that it's more like a fibrous cucumber (cucumis sativus) on the inside. The fruits have a pleasant enough flavour and texture to be eaten raw, though it is traditionally cooked in syrup and made into sweetmeats, prepared like a cooked vegetable or made into preserves.
