Meta: Who Really Are the Varelsi, and What Are They REALLY Up To?
Maybe the Varelsi were what became of the Aztanti. Other than some references to their appearance in Kelvin’s lore (that parts of him look like an Aztanti skeleton), we don’t actually know for sure what the Aztanti actually look like. We know (from lore in a previous battleplan) that the Aztanti are the ancestors of both the Jennerit and Eldrid, but their true appearances are pretty much a mystery.
Something happened and the Varelsi/Aztanti (as they were long, long ago) were banished to/trapped in the void. The void, going along with this hypothesis, isn't so much an actual void (in the sense of being a realm of nothingness in-between universes) as actually another universe altogether. It could be they were even a breakoff sect that was experimenting with more risky methods of portal technology. This more risky portal technology either went wrong by itself, or was affected by areas where the walls between the universes are thinner. This led to them opening a portal to the void universe, and getting sucked in and trapped there. Once trapped, the Varelsi, over thousands of years, morphed into what we see them as now. It is also possible that what we see of the Varelsi is not their true form as they appear in the void, but rather a differing view of what parts of them are visible in this universe.
The current Varelsi portaling technology is them figuring out how to get back into this universe, the universe they were originally a part of in the first place. But now, the varelsi believe (or could just be leading Rendain to believe) that this universe is ending. That idea is also supported/hinted at by ISIC and his algorithm. The entire game has recurring themes of ending/dying/things nearing the end (which I’ve written about before here).
The Varelsi believe that this universe will soon end, so they're veiling the planets and stars in order to bring them into their universe, believing that they are saving them from the death of this universe in the process.
