Astra blinks, and snatches the jumper off the couch and holds it behind her back. Alex stares, genuinely taken aback by how… unlike her that is. It’s more of a Kara characteristic than anything she’s seen Astra do before. Astra swallows, coughs, and says, ‘sorry, I… have been distracted lately’.
‘Yeah, I’ve noticed’. Alex keeps her voice light, tilting her head slightly. ‘You okay?’
Astra shifts from foot to foot, and runs a hand through her hair. ‘Yes. I just… haven’t been sleeping well’.
Alex frowns. ‘You know, you’ve never struck me as someone who leaves clothes everywhere’.
Astra coughs again. ‘I… well, yes. I’m trying something new’.
Alex laughs. ‘I could give you some tips’.
Astra gives her a small, genuine smile, and Alex decides to ignore her feelings of jealousy, at least for a moment. She really does have a nice smile.
She's going to die here. She's had the thought more than once in her life, faced with Lionel's rage, with Martine's cruelty. In a sense, she always thought she'd die bleeding out on the floor, whether at Lionel's hands or Martine's, whether in her own home or in Cadmus.
She just didn't think she'd die in a gutter.
And she is going to die here. The hard stones are cold underneath her, the pool of her own blood warm against her fingers. It hurts to breathe, and she’s almost sure he broke a few of her ribs.
She could fumble for her phone, and call for help. It’s just that she has no reason to, anymore. It’s not like that time Lionel left her in a mess of broken glass, and she was afraid that Lena or Lex would come home and find her like that. She had a reason then, to push past the pain and call for help.
She doesn’t, now. Lena isn’t going to stumble upon her. There’s no one waiting for her, or expecting her to come home. There’s… no one.
It’s a very succinct summary of her life, in a way, that she’s going to die alone.
