Theology Thursday: Ecclesiastes
Among the best known verses is this one from Ecclesiastes, "Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity." (Eccles. 1:2) The Hebrew word used five times in this verse is הבל and is found fewer than 60 other places in the Hebrew Bible. Following the term into the Septuagint we find the Greek word ματαιοτης is even more obscure, used in the New Testament only three times. The translation from Hebrew into Greek is more straightforward than I sometimes see. Both words mean futile or meaningless or empty in English. This dramatic declaration appears to lack nuance. However, the New Testament use (Rom. 8:20, Eph. 4:17, 2 Pet. 2:18) offers hope that meaninglessness is a pre-redemption state of affairs. I am sometimes tempted to agree with 'the Preacher' so it is helpful to me to view this verse through a linguistic lens that gives me hope. Jesus is the salvation of everything as well as everyone. There is no need to think that all is meaningless.
Ecclesiastes
moment of clarity.
All things are full of weariness, a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
