51. “something scared me” hug
Their loud, intoxicated laughter echoed throughout the empty halls. Neither could quite remember what had been so amusing, but it didn't matter in their current state. The world had a vignette glow to it, and was tinted by the lingering smoke of the party. They passed a half-empty bottle between them as they stumbled about, no destination in mind.
"I can't believe that you - !"
" - And you! That was bloodly fantastic, mate."
This is how they spoke, finishing each other's vague, open-ended statements without having to ask what it was about. (Looking back, Marlene misses this. Emma was very much an extension of herself, a reckless partner in crime up until they grew estranged.) Suddenly, cutting through the thick, carelessly atmosphere, a shriek. It had come from Marlene's throat before she even realized it had; she clung onto Emma from behind, nails digging into her friend's arms.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!"
"There was a rat!"
