In this workshop, artist Lauren Marsden will take participants on a journey through the world of GIF-making. Â The Animated GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), although not a new form of image making, has become increasingly popular in contemporary advertising and digital media culture.
On the first workshop day, Lauren will present a history of the GIF (from early stereoscopy to contemporary memes), and participants will create their own photographic still images on film (yes, actual film), which will be developed on-site at the Iris Film Collective Studio at the Falaise Fieldhouse by a technician.
The second workshop day at VIVO will focus on transforming these film stills into digital form and creating living, breathing, animated GIFs through various techniques in speed, palette, sizing, and 3D effects via Adobe Photoshop.
Students will each be provided with one roll of film.
Requirements: Some Photoshop experience is beneficial but not required. This workshop is best suited to photographers and filmmakers who are comfortable with a manual SLR camera.
A few still cameras will be available for use, but participants are encouraged to bring their own cameras as well (35mm or 120mm).
