Nobulgo
WELL, PEOPLE MAY LOOK DOWN ON US MECHANICAL MEN, BUT LET ME TELL YOU: A SMOOTH DOME OF GLASS IS USEFUL WHEN SOMETHING'S TRYING TO GRAB ONTO YOUR FACE FOR SOME “GHOULGRASP OF THE DEEP” FELLER!
Flittering Faceclamper
Description
From above, this small creature resembles a flying squirrel, with markings on its back that resemble a fanged, grinning face. From below, most of its body is taken up by a massive mouth with sharp teeth and a long tongue. Its tail is black, and surrounded by a sooty gas.
Biology
Unlike most Vampire Thralls, the Nobulgo's mammalian aspects are derived from the Sciuridae family, as opposed to their more common chiropteran relatives. Like their mundane counterparts, the monster has membranes of skin between its limbs, making it nimble both on the ground and in the air. If its movement can't allow it to escape a predator, it can shed a thick, dark, and rank smog made from loose skin cells and hair from its tail.
However, none of these abilities are the most famous aspect of this monster. Rather, it appears to have been made for the purpose of mental domination. When inserted into the orifice or wound of another monster, the Nolbulgo's tongue can transmit nanomons that are specialized for neural manipulation of the victim, allowing the creature's exact movements to be controlled for as long as it can stay attached. In addition, small “snipper” cells collect bits of genetic information from the target.
Similarly to their ancestors, the monster's courtship takes the form of frantic chases between males and females, with only those that can successfully catch the other being able to spread their genes. The near-embryonic babies crawl onto the tail of their mother, sometimes attaching to other monsters like a tick if the mother has to emit smog.
Behavior
Initial reports of the Nobulgo came from outside Mortasheen, which combined with its unusual ancestry leads to speculation that the species was created by a Vampire without access to common methods of genetic manipulation.
Given its abilities, the monster seems to have been made to target entities that are deemed useful to control, but cannot be directly infected by the Vampire itself. Accordingly, the monster walks a fine line between commander and servant, combining constant offers of assistance with a tendency for overmanaging the behaviors of anything that it can't directly manipulate.
Without anyone to “assist” the monster tends to become distressed, with reports of some developing a mental disorder where the Nobulgo develops the delusion of acting out the orders of a nonexistent leader. These crazed specimens tend to justify all their actions as securing the superiority of their fictional masters, even as their explanations become increasingly incoherent.
