reading vampire science by jon blum & kate orman, which opens in a dyke bar in san francisco, but this was published by bbc books in 1998 so we're not told in so many words that it's actually a dyke bar, but it is. it's just entertainingly lowkey about it
the POV character (caroline) sort of vaguely describes it as a good place to get away from macho disco bros (it's 1976) & then goes up to sam (describing sam's appearance in her narration as "unapologetically butch") like "hey, kid, are you new here, you'd better be careful, there's a lot of love-em-and-leave-em pickup artist types who come here, did you come here alone?"
sam is like "nah! i came here with him!" [points at the Oscar Wilde cosplayer she came here with]
and caroline looks him up and down and goes "I take it he's not your boyfriend?"
sam says "no way on earth!"
and caroline thinks that's "a good sign"
also the only named/described characters in this scene are sam, caroline, a woman playing a guitar onstage, a bartender named lyn, eight doing his oscar-wilde babydyke's-gay-roommate thing, and a VAMPIRE LADY CHOMPING A WOMAN IN THE ALLEY!
