Canada’s “150″ canada day is tomorrow and i live in the capital. on the one hand you have ignorant corporations who are taking every advantage to promote and financially gain from this big celebration (including a prime minister who hasn’t made good on his promises)
on the other you have the more than ever heated, and rightfully so, anger and push back from indigenous communities & their allies that the celebration is a marker of the genocide that occurred and the populations that continue to be ignored among abuse and murder as a result of this colonization of land that was never surrendered
on the other hand, as a second generation immigrant, my family has safety and advantages they wouldn’t have gotten in guatemala. my grandparents are happy to be here, and my mom considers canada her home. i feel pride looking at the canadian flag, rather than confusion and something empty looking at the guatemalan one. i used to celebrate happily
and shit man, there’s so much tension i just wanna go to a field and set off some fireworks for the sake of blowing shit up
