Reading Challenge Week Seventeen - By an Indie Author
Ashen Shadows - Ewe Linka
A country terrorized by an evil queen. A young woman who needs to hide because of her identity. A princess who has never disobeyed her mother. A thief who does not do feelings - they only get in the way. One person who knows everything. And one chance to bring down a dying kingdom.
Iâm not sure yet how I feel about this one. I really enjoyed reading it, but at the same time I feel like the story was a bit superficial. The characters were amazing, and it was not so difficult falling in love with them. There were some obvious underlying currents that could impact the story a lot, and it kept you lured in. But I feel like those twist were maybe kept bottled up too long, making them lose their strength. Basically everything gets uncovered in the last chapter, and through a letter, making the reaction of the characters disappear. (If there would come a second book however, I feel like that could be something really great.)
Nevertheless, it was a really good read. I liked how the characters fit in with each other, and how the pieces of the puzzle didnât always fit in immediately, instead making you wait for that extra bit of information. The focus was always on the female characters as well, which I liked. There were important male characters, but the girls did not rely on them to get their jobs done.Â
Heya people.
Remember? Iâve created some kind of a closed specie, the ValĂŠĂŻs. Recently, a good pal told me âhey, do Archie and Maxie too! turn them into ValĂŠĂŻs!â aaannnd guess what? so I did.
I donât know if Iâll finish it digitaly or not (means tradâ ya know). Also, Archie is super mega fluffy here and I love them.
Well, I also have exams this week, so hm I wonât be able to finish them now (at least I hope? I mean, I need to work but I love them way too much and I just want to line them and all instead of sleeping).
Overview
- A gas giant rich in Vortium, a compound vital to the process of creating reinforced transparisteel
- Located in the Mid-Rim; Vortic System
- Orbited by Zenith Station, which serves as the headquarters of Zenith Holdings
Affiliation: Officially neutral. Â Currently administered by Zenith Holdings.
Flora and fauna: Â Known native species include the Oswaft, large flying animals native to its upper atmosphere. Â Knowledge of the ecosystem believed to exist in the planetâs upper atmosphere is limited by lack of research.
History
Discovery
The Vortic System was discovered by the Empire in 50 BTC. Â Dismissed as a remote, uninhabitable system with little strategic or economic value, further charting of its worlds was not a priority for the Sphere of Expansion and Diplomacy. Â Enjoying both its remoteness and its exotic upper atmosphere fauna, the eccentric Moff Audrine Sevellis of Kaas City laid claim to one of its planets. In 48 BTC, she built Vortic Outpost, a small space station around gas giant Vortic 5, intended to serve as a vacation home and wartime shelter for her family.
Vortium Mining and Audrinite Refining
Surveys of the planet, which Sevellis commissioned herself, revealed that it was rich in a previously unknown compound, which Imperial scientists christened vortium. Â Sevellis sponsored several research projects at the behest of her grandson, Rynton, who was working on lommite processing. Â In 20 BTC, he patented a process which used audrinite, a compound he created from vortium, to produce a stronger variant of reinforced transparisteel. Â
Moff Sevellis expanded Vortic Outpost, establishing a full-time independent mining and refining operation. Â Ever the loyal Imperial citizen, her company extended favourable pricing to the Empire and its allies. She oversaw its operation until her death in 10 BTC, when Sevellis Resource Management (SRM) was transferred to Rynton Sevellis.
Under Ryntonâs administration, SRM maintained a research and development focus. Â Though they patented several processes, audrinite and reinforced transparisteel remained SRMâs flagship products. Â It was during audrinite negotiations with the Chiss Ascendancy that Rynton met Imperial diplomatic envoy to Sarvchi, Iela Roane. Â In addition to securing the contract with the Ascendancy, Roane ended up marrying Rynton Sevellis, joining their clan. Â She assumed station administration duties, and was the catalyst behind its controversial sale to Zenith Holdings. Â
Acquisition by Zenith Holdings
SRMâs lucrative vortium mining operation, the space station, and their audrinite plant were sold to private company Zenith Holdings for an undisclosed sum in 2 ATC. Industry observers believe the transfer was a calculated political move, as Zenith Holdings independence from the Empire enables the newly-rechristened Zenith Station to become a profitable, neutral hub. Â Fallout in the Empire suggests that many view the Sevellises, who retain the patent on audrinite, as profiteers, but no official response has been issued.
Zenith Station
Currently, Zenith Station is administered by the company. Â In addition to serving as the galactic HQ for Zenith Holdings, the expanded station houses the refinery, the mining operation, SRMâs main laboratory, employee housing and recreation areas, and several large private residences, including the historic vacation estate of Moff Audrine Sevellis. Â The latter serves as the Imperial Diplomatic headquarters, a position currently filled by Iela Sevellis. Â
Information on Zenith Station's defenses and docking facilities will be made available shortly.
