Summary: These pre-warp humanoids lived in a peaceful society with a more primitive humanoid species known as the Menk. Their treatment of the Menk was far from cruel, but to a human mindset, it sometimes came across as condescending and repressive. In the mid-22nd century, they began suffering from a serious and debilitating disease. They had already made contact with the Ferengi and the M'klexa, and knew there was intelligent life beyond their world. Desperate for aid, they built four starships and sent them out to find help. The NX-01 Enterprise came across one such vessel, and was led back to Valakis. Sadly, the NX-01's surgeon, Dr. Phlox, discovered that the illness was a genetic disorder. Phlox refused to cure them, however, claiming that interfering with the natural development of the species could cause disaster. The Valakians have been extinct as of the 24th Century. Phlox's refusal to treat the Valakians is currently the subject of bitter argument among many humanoids, due to its ethical ramifications.
