Every member of Team RWBY is in the exact opposite spot they were at the beginning of the show.
Blake started off as a quiet, pessimistic girl who didn’t believe in fantasy. One of her first lines in the show is in response to Ruby, saying “That’s very ambitious for a child. Unfortunately, the world isn’t like a fairy tale.” And now, Blake Belladonna is taking charge and living the life of a character in their favourite fantasy book. She is living that fairy tale, and actually has hope for the world that she never possessed before.
Ruby, however, was the exact opposite. When she was speaking with Blake, she said she wanted to be like those people in the books, prompting Blake’s response. And then Ruby says, “Well, that’s why we’re here.” Ruby had so much hope, so much good to give to the broken world. But instead of her delicate nature helping to heal it, it turned on her and broke her instead.
Weiss was the privileged heir to the Schnee Dust Company, completely set and confident in herself and where she came from. She was proud of her name, proud of her home, and eager to tell off anyone who insulted either. Starting in V7, she started to reject the name more forcefully and actually put consequences on what her family had done. She was starting to break the ties, but still had pride that she could change it. That is, until her home came crashing down. Now, she has no anchor, she has no sense of self, because what is left? Her home and her name are gone, all that’s left is herself.
Yang wanted to protect her little sister. She went to Beacon, intent on keeping her out of harms way and ensuring she would be safe. She has always looked after her, and will continue to do so. But then, she fell. And then Ruby fell. And then everyone else fell. She failed. Yang sacrifice herself because, as long as Ruby survived, it would be okay. Her sole purpose was to protect her, and she failed. Her absolute disappointment upon seeing Ruby when they are in Ever After: instead of a happy reunion, we instead got “Dammit! You weren’t supposed to be here.” Yang has lost her confidence in her ability to protect the only person she swore to.
