An article published in "The Astrophysical Journal Letters" reports the discovery of clumps of matter that could become planets around the young star V960 Mon. A team of researchers used the SPHERE instrument mounted on ESO's VLT and the ALMA radio telescope, both in Chile, to examine the state of what could be a system in formation. The detection of masses estimated to be several times the Earth's could constitute the first evidence of the formation of planets through the process of gravitational instability.

Un articolo pubblicato sulla rivista "The Astrophysical Journal Letters" riporta la scoperta di grumi di materia che potrebbero diventare pianeti attorno alla giovane stella V960 Mon. Un team di ricercatori che include Antonio Garufi dell'INAF (Istituto nazionale di astrofisica) di Arcetri ha usato lo strumento SPHERE montato sul VLT dell'ESO e il radiotelescopio ALMA, entrambi in Cile, per esaminare lo stato di quello che potrebbe essere un sistema in fase di formazione. La rilevazione di masse stimate in diverse volte quella della Terra potrebbero costituire la prima prova della formazione di pianeti tramite il processo dell'instabilità gravitazionale.
