when he first sees it, he swears it simply calls to him, like a siren on the rocks, beautiful and alluring and impossible not to reach out for. he’s surprised to find something so uniquely valuable in such an odd, cramped little space, but perhaps that’s how it’s survived so long, perhaps that’s the fate that has led the two of them to exist in the same place; a miracle of timing.

jaewon reaches out and grabs the bottle by the neck, lifting it up in the dim, difficult emergency lights that are streaming throughout the decimated ship, a spacecraft the vanta crew have pretty well just annihilated. most of the other ship’s crew is still alive, floating away in escape pods, but their belongings are all still safely tucked away inside this heap of shit, which is about as ideal as things can get. jaewon and a few of his crew are scouring over the remains, picking out anything valuable or interesting.

and this—this is definitely a prize. old and almost perfectly preserved, the fine wine bottle doesn’t even look like it has a scratch on it and he lets the corners of his lips tilt upwards. suji is going to love this, he just knows it; he doesn’t think they’ve ever had this type of wine before. it’s from earth, which means it could be incredibly expensive, and he wonders for a split-second whether he ought to save it and sell it later, but when weighed against his second option, selling it becomes out of the question. he doesn’t want to sell it, he wants to drink it.

sometimes, in a life as harsh as this one, you’ve got to live a little.

and suji likes wines, she’ll be ecstatic. or at least he hopes she will be as he puts it away inside his bag, safely storing it until he returns to the vantablack. it’s pretty late in the evening, so the chances of her being in the engine room are fairly small, but he checks there first anyway before heading off to her room. with most everyone else on the ship, he would wait until morning, wait until some better, decent hour to barge in on them, but this is suji, she’s… well, she’s special.

and that’s basically the encapsulated term for everything about suji inside jaewon’s mind, his regard for her is different than everyone else and he can’t really explain why. maybe it’s the fact that she’s known him the longest out of everyone here ( consistently longer, as opposed to having known won when they were both young scraps on the streets of kavasch ), or perhaps because being around her causes him to feel the need to grow as a person and simultaneously pay her more attention, as though everything she does ought to be noted down somewhere. he finds her a little bit fascinating, catching himself watching her a little too long sometimes.

she is inherently opposite of him, raised in nothing but wealth and privilege, and seemingly everything he ought to despise, but after the last few years of connection between them, he inadvertently feels more comfortable with her than most everyone else on the crew. he can’t help it and he doubts she even realizes.

☾ ˚・you’ve gotten yourself into a sticky situation and makes conversation with a snooty person quick they’re making a scene help, suji ends up using her old status as a governor’s daughter “gone abroad” to help you

☆・｡ “what do you mean you ripped your disguise? don’t take off your makeup! earth citizens can practically scent outsiders if you’re not dressed the same. ugh i’ll come fix you up, don’t move”

☾ ˚・ between suji is fast hot wiring a keypass and you looking out for guards during the triggered system, you choose the perfect time to engage in a serious discussion and “are you seriously trying to have this conversation now?”

this is the problem with going to fancy parties; jaewon is forced to dress up nicely—groomed hair, pretty, fancy suit, whole new vocabulary to remember to use—and he still doesn’t look half as good as the ladies of vantablack do, and it makes him nervous to have them all out here like this. of course they can protect themselves, of course suji can take care of herself, but seeing her all girly and dolled up like this still triggers his protective nature. it’s trouble because she’s beautiful and he has to actively remind himself not to growl at anyone who gives her a second look.
