Loose black curls hung around her shoulders. Annabelle could hardly breathe in the large corseted dress. She put her hand to her stomach and tried to breathe. It was a fairly difficult feat. She smiled and curtsied to the male her father was introducing her to - though her eyes had wandered away, two months in since they had seceded from the union, just across the road, less than two miles from where they were - was the union. The United states.
And on the other side of that road, lived a family she once was close with; with a male she was more interested in than the one being introduced to her. She curtsied to the man then went on to the next. But her eyes and mind barely left the road and the fence, where somewhere on the other side was that brown haired man. She was sure he likely had a wife already, and she was told she had no choice but to marry whom her father wanted - and yet she wanted nothing more than to jump the fence.
She broke away after her father released her, noticing his daughter's mind wandered away with her. She trailed her eyes back to the fence, then looked back towards her family.
She hiked her dress up and ran for the road, as fast as she could.
