Ganesh, still singing, gently wiped the tiger clean of henna. Later, at the wedding, all the guests gathered around the tiger’s paw print, listening to Daya recount the story. Word of the incident soon spread through West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bangladesh, becoming the stuff of folk lore. Couples throughout India offered fortunes for Ganesh to sing at their weddings. *Ganesh and the Tiger* (part 2 of 3) Ganesh looked up from the bowl of henna to see a giant Bengal tiger standing before him. The thunder had been the tiger breathing. The tiger towered over Ganesh, his paws were almost the size of Ganesh’s head. Ganesh was petrified. It was as if his soul had fled, leaving the eggshell of his body kneeling before the giant. The tiger looked at the boy, inquisitively - apparently fascinated by what the boy was doing. He looked down at the bowl of henna, then up at the boy; towards the house, up to the river, then back down at the henna. Ganesh was overwhelmed by the God before him. For if anything living deserved that title, this was he. His beautiful coat, thick around his neck and chest. His cupped hand ears, galaxy deep eyes, and his perfect black stripes, that to Ganesh appeared like an external skeleton tattooed on his giant muscular body. The tiger chuffed and, without warning, put his paw in the henna. Instantly removing it, the tiger, gazed curiously at the strange rainbow coloured mud that smelt like meadow grass. He chuffed again and placed his paw back on the stone patio, where Ganesh had been mixing the henna. Bright indigo blue liquid marks hung like dew on the tiger’s whiskers and nostril. Ganesh erupted with laughter. For several seconds the quiet village echoed with Ganesh’s delight. Then, the tiger barked out a volcanic “no” sound. The deep resonant haunting noise brought Daya running down the stairs and into the courtyard where she came face to face with the immense animal.
