In a ceremony filled with the presidential emblems, sweeping views of the Forty Acres and music from university and community ensembles, Fenves was formally inaugurated as the 29th president of The University of Texas at Austin on Sept. 17.
He also delivered his first-ever State of the University address, in which he laid out his vision to build on the university's excellence by more effectively merging its research and teaching missions and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and research.
Fenves began his role as the 29th president of The University of Texas at Austin on June 3 after previously serving as UT Austin's provost and executive vice president since 2013.
He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the highest national honor awarded to engineers in the United States. Prior to being named provost, Fenves served for five years as dean of UT Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering.
Tower Shines Orange with "29" for President Fenves
The university Tower will shine with a burnt orange glow tonight in honor of the Presidential Inauguration of Gregory L. Fenves. To recognize his role as the 29th president of The University of Texas at Austin, the Tower’s windows will be lit to display “29.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are proud of the history of The University of Texas at Austin and we are poised for the next era of our great university.

During the Presidential Inauguration Thursday, UT Austin representatives will present special emblems to Gregory L. Fenves.
Traditionally presented to an incoming present during inaugural ceremonies, the emblems UT Austin alumni, staff, faculty, students and regents will give Fenves are symbolic of the vast responsibilities a president bears, and at the same time, embody the tremendous trust that is bestowed upon the office of the president by constituents from across the university.

The official University of Texas Ring, presented by alumni
The official university of Texas ring commemorates the unique and lifelong affiliation each graduate has with the university. Presented by the Texas Exes, the university's ex-students' association, this honorary class ring symbolizes the president's lifetime role as an ambassador for the university to alumni around the world.
The University of Texas Gavel of Office, presented by staff
The gavel of office was hand crafted by university staff members and is representative of the talent and dedication of thousands of staff members. It is emblematic of the judicious responsibility a president has for the care and well being of all employees.
The University of Texas Presidential Regalia, presented by faculty
The presidential regalia was designed by faculty and served as the prototype for UT Austin's custom doctoral regalia, now worn by graduates around the world. Distinguished by a fourth chevron on the gown's sleeve, it identifies the president as the institution's chief academic officer and is emblematic of the president's leadership role in academic accomplishment.
The University of Texas Medallion of Office, presented by students
The medallion of office contains an image of the star from the state of Texas seal set over a sunrise from the 1900 diploma. The star is a symbol of the bright promise and unlimited opportunity the university would bring to Texas. It was first presented to the president in 2000 as a gift from students to “embody the hope, spirit and high achievement of all students.
The Mace of Authority, presented by regents
On top of the mace of authority is a gavel symbolizing leadership. On one side is a fleur-de-lis evoking the light of learning, and on the other, a cornucopia signifying the abundance of knowledge within the university. The mace represents the authority vested by the state of Texas through the university of Texas system board of regents to the president of the university of Texas at Austin.
