“The Great Purge” as a term has been misused in Camelot for the past 20 years to describe the events of Uther’s ban on magic. In reality, Uther frequently says this in reference to a break-up with his former lover, Gaius.

The only reason Uther kept Gaius around is the same reason he burnt sorcerers while still using magic for himself, he wanted to have the unofficial position of a court sorcerer to stay without it being filled by a known sorcerer. Gaius was a physician but knew magic and that’s why he lived while others were burned. It wasn’t because of Gaius’s loyalties, it was because Uther knew that he would need to turn to magic one day for his own benefit, and not for his magical knowledge only, he blatantly asked Gaius to use magic to save Morgana’s life, and he had to keep one around for that.
