Introduction
Hello! I’m Janelle and I’ve created this blog to record my experiences and learning as a recipient of the Undergraduate Student Research Initiative (USRI) Grant. I am a second-year Child and Youth Care student with MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and received this grant to attend the Nurturing Hope: 3rd Child and Youth Care World Conference in Ventura, California, USA. I am one of the presenters at this conference alongside Jenny McGrath and Sarah Fodchuk. Our presentation revolves around student learning in practicum. Jenny is a professor in the Child and Youth Care Department at MacEwan and lead my practicum and seminar experience in my first year. Sarah is a graduate of the MacEwan Child and Youth Care program and is the supervisor of the Chantal Bérubé Youth Centre where I had my first practicum. I am lucky enough to present alongside these impressive ladies, representing the student perspective of first practicums and effective learning.
In addition to being able to attend a world conference, this grant afforded me the opportunities to experience a lot of firsts: being on an airplane, being outside of the country, and seeing the ocean! In order to record these personal experiences as well as the learnings I acquire so I can later present on the outcomes of receiving this grant, I will be updating this blog during my stay in California.
