Love that Cell Phone.
Cell phones are everywhere. What a big part of our lives they have become. For some, the cellphone is a best friend. (Siri is not my best friend but I think of her as a close 2nd cousin.) I remember the Christmas we gave both our girls a cell phone as a present. The phone company was offering a great deal and I remember thinking how we saved a bundle on that gift. Little did I know what those phones would cost us over the next few years. I'd have saved more money taking everyone to Disney World. My mother is the only person I know who for some reason can't grasp the whole cell phone thing. She and my Father took an overnight trip a while ago and I tried to call them a number of times, with no luck. Finally, after they returned home I asked my Mom why they never answered the cell phone. Her reason was unique, "Well it's hard to get to because we keep it in the trunk of the car." (Who keeps their Telephone in the trunk of the car? No one does, except my Mom.) Imagine if Jack Bauer on the series "24" had kept his cell phone in the trunk. We would have lost the country to foreign powers. My mother's cell phone is also never turned on. She doesn't want to run down the battery. I explained how you can recharge the phone. It's meant to be kept on. That's how you're able to get a call from someone. Like your son. Come on mom it's a telephone that you can talk on from anywhere. LIke the store or a school event or even from vacation. I talked with my mother not too long ago about how she can use the cell phone as much as she wants. It's not like an EpiPen or a road-flare. You use those once and they are done. Not the cell phone. I admit it's a cool idea to keep a phone in the trunk in case you're carjacked and stuffed in your car trunk. Who would think you'd have an extra phone back there for an emergency? My mother for years had an old cell phone that was the size of one of those walkie talkies you see used in old World War 2 movies. It was as large as one of Shaq's Sneakers. It also had a bag with what looked like a small car battery in it she kept for the phone. It took forever to get her to move on from that relic. When someone mistook it for an Insulin Pump my Mom got rid of it. (Mother can be a bit vain.) My mother is the best, but trying to get her to understand the cell phone is a battle. Yes, it's a telephone and you can take pictures with it and listen to music. I don't want to tell her to much it'll scare her away. I've tried different methods to help her GET how they work. Recently I told her to imagine a group of bank robbers. Now you, Mom are driving the getaway car. While the gang is in the bank holding the place up, what would you as the getaway driver be doing? She said: "Well I'd probably be sitting in the car, out front of the bank." I then asked if she would have the car running or not? She said; "Well, of course, it would be running, so we could make a quick getaway." I then added, "Why not just sit out on the hood of the car twirling the keys on your finger til they come rushing out of the bank?" She said how that would be stupid. " Yeah exactly, kinda like keeping a cell phone in the trunk of the car." My mom didn't hit me. She just mumbled what sounded like "Wait til your father gets home".
