Mobile Anthropology: meeting the user

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of EOO Sweden, as it will then be one year ago since we fully immersed ourselves in the process of forging the company and building the products we had envisioned. It is then ironic, perhaps, that it took until this last Monday for us to actually travel to and meet aphasia patients that have been using our app Dialog and hear their feedback. It was about time, and was it useful! We have always taken great pride in building our solutions upon the feedback and validated needs of our user group, which are Speech & Language Therapists as well as patients. With SLTs we’ve had much exchange, digitally and through plenty of physical meetings. They have been speaking for their patients and their relatives, and through this collaboration we have been able to develop product that we are proud of. However, we make our tools to give those who lost their language a new method by which to communicate. At the end of the day, it is people with aphasia and not those who speak for them who will tell us wether we are on the right track or not. Meeting the user in his or her environment and on their terms can be daunting for a developer. We have spent countless of hours in our lab, trying to solve technical problems and provide what we consider is good user experience. Seeing the app at use in the real world is a very different, and very educational, thing. Main insights from our meeting with the fantastic people in Örebro, Sweden on July 10: 1. More UI feedback and responsiveness is needed for these patients to effectively manuever the interface. The people we met were all seniour citizens with limited digital literacy, with a recent stroke and aphasia on top - and they need the app to be über clear. We will make sure it is. 2. It is the SLTs and the relatives of the patients (those who take the role of communication partner) that we must approach with our message, because it is they who have the opportunity to spend the many hours it takes with the patient to get acquainted with the tool. This had been our feeling, now we know. 3. Empower by simplicity. We must work even harder at creating seamless solutions for everything that can be seen as a threshold in the app(s), because otherwise patients will get stuck and abandon the rehabilitation. The only way we will learn what things to cut away or shave down is to meet actual users again and again, so that each development decision is validated in reality. This we thought we knew, now we won’t forget it. One year has passed and we can honestly say that we have built solutions that are starting to have a positive impact among people with aphasia. Yet, the surface is all but scratched and know we need to turn this early traction into wide conversion. These are exciting times :)
