One of the books written during the Korean War that criticized excessive American use of firepower in Korea was called The Hidden History of the Korean War. One of the several charges that its author, I. F. Stone, contended against the United States was that the U.N. Command had demonstrated "a complete indifference to the welfare of non-combatants through its policies of bombing and village destruction." Stone argued that American bombing had ignored Truman's instructions to strike only specific military targets when necessary. Stone condemned "the scorched earth policy that U.N. forces had implemented in their retreat from the Chinese. He asserted that the military's press releases substantiated these charges of indiscriminate destruction. Stone pointed to the Air Force's claimed destruction of Sinuiju and the Navy's extensive shelling of Wonsan."

"By 55% to 18%, Americans say that federal immigration agents were not justified in the amount of force they used in shooting Pretti. Majorities of Democrats (89%) and Independents (57%) say the shooting was not justified. Republicans are nearly twice as likely to say it was justified as not justified (41% vs. 21%). People who have seen video of the shooting are more likely than those who haven't to have an opinion on whether the shooting was justified, and by 66% to 21%, view it as not justified. Nearly half of people who haven't seen video of the incident don't have an opinion; 38% view it as not justified and 16% view it as justified."

“From the beginning of his presidency, Donald Trump has threatened to destabilize the international legal order. Early in his second term, he claimed he would “take back” the Panama Canal, make Canada the 51st U.S. state, acquire Greenland, and “own” Gaza. Foreign policy experts shook their heads, reluctant to take Trump seriously. After all, his declarations seemed erratic and poorly thought out. Yet even speaking the words did damage. As we argued in Foreign Affairs last summer, Trump’s threats reflected a troubling lack of commitment to the legal structure the United States and its allies created 80 years ago. The norm against the use of force, embodied in the UN Charter, was already under strain. But Trump’s open disregard of this prohibition threatened to trigger its collapse.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the State of Illinois sued the Trump administration Monday for what it says is the Department of Homeland Security’s “dangerous use of force” and “coordinated campaign of violence and intimidation” dressed up as legitimate immigration enforcement. “The Trump administration has unleashed an organized bombardment on the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago, causing turmoil and imposing a climate of fear,” the lawsuit alleges. “Though Defendants describe this assault as ‘immigration enforcement,’ the reality is that uniformed, military-trained personnel, carrying semi-automatic firearms and military-grade weaponry, have rampaged for months through Chicago and surrounding areas, lawlessly stopping, interrogating, and arresting residents, and attacking them with chemical weapons.” Moreover, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents — overseen by Border Patrol official Greg Bovino and DHS Secretary Krisiti Noem — are part of an “occupation” in Chicago and its suburbs that is ultimately meant to “coerce” state officials into abandoning their own immigration policies, the lawsuit alleges. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday. In recent months, Chicago has seen the Trump administration send immigration agents to storm apartment complexes, deploy chemical agents near schools and even handcuff a Chicago city council member at a hospital. At least two people have been shot by agents, and over 1,000 immigrants have been arrested since a crackdown began in September.

[...] The Trump administration also attempted to withhold federal funding from Illinois unless it went along with federal immigration enforcement tactics instead of upholding its own laws, like the 2017 Trust Act or the Way Forward Act. The Trust Act bars state law enforcement officers from arresting people solely on their immigration status; the Way Forward Act expanded limits on how state and local law enforcement assist federal immigration operations.
