Maximilian “Maxime” DeLacroix – A Young Ventrue in the Shadows
I first encountered Hugo Allenby at one of the city’s high-society gatherings. He carried himself with the kind of confidence and polish that makes one notice, even in a crowd accustomed to wealth and prestige. Sharp, clever, aware of every nuance of conversation and display—he had the potential to move in ways few mortals could, if only he were guided.
It was not his wealth that drew my attention, though he had it in abundance, nor his comfort with influence, though he wielded it naturally. It was the combination of discipline, intellect, and social acuity. Hugo could calculate, persuade, and adapt. These were qualities that could serve him—and me—well in the nights to come.
The decision to embrace him was deliberate. He awoke as Maximilian DeLacroix, and with that transformation, the world became both larger and far more perilous. Hunger came immediately, as it does, but Hugo had always been controlled and methodical. Those traits remained, only sharpened now by necessity.
I have guided him in the ways of our kind. Presence, Dominate, Fortitude—he learns quickly. I do not coddle him. I instruct. I observe. He must navigate politics, subtle influence, and the weight of expectations with care, for failure is rarely forgiven in our society.
Yet I sense distraction, subtle though it may be. There is someone from his past, a connection not fully severed. A mortal woman who once held his attention. I have observed him linger longer than necessary near places she frequents, a quiet fascination in his gaze. It is prudent to remind him that attachments are liabilities—but I note it nonetheless, for what he does with that longing may shape nights to come.
He is still young, and he still errs at times. That is to be expected. But he listens. He observes. He moves deliberately. I do not fear for his capability, only for the city if he ever grows careless.
Maximilian DeLacroix is now more than a childe; he is a carefully honed instrument of influence, a bridge between the modern world and the enduring traditions of the Camarilla. He is mine, and I expect him to wield what I have granted him with precision, discretion, and ambition
